THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 23. Noted writer and academician S. Guptan Nair today described poet Edassery Govindan Nair as a great poet from North Kerala who lived and died relatively unknown to the people in the South. He was speaking at a function organised to celebrate the 98th birth anniversary celebration of the poet in the city. Edassery was unlike most of our `new generation' poets who hanker after fame and publicity by publishing their maiden works at the earliest available opportunity, he said. The popularity of his poems proved that good poetry will ultimately get recognition. He commended Edassery's works for their meaningful portrayal of real life situations and their seamless appeal to poetry lovers of all generations. Even novelist Uroob drew inspiration from Edassery's works. According to Mr. Nair, Edassery was not a poet who lived in a dream world. "He had a day to day interaction with the rural folk of his village and their concerns were his concerns too." The vice-president of Edassery Smaraka Samithi, K. P. Shankaran, said Edassery had drawn attention to the limitations of our educational system through poems such as `Chooralinte munpil' and `Pallikoodathilekku veendum.' It might be an irony that the same poems are now a part of the university syllabus, Mr. Shankaran said. The meeting was preceded by a rendition of Edassery's `Poothappattu' by V. K. Sasidharan.
