THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 23 . The police have arrested a 22-year-old youth on the charge of cheating more than Rs. 15 lakhs from Reliance Infocom, a private mobile telephone company. The accused was identified as Rajesh Kumar of Peroorkada. The Dy.SP (Attingal), B. Sasidharan, said the modus operandi of the accused was to take Reliance telephone connections after furnishing fake addresses. The phone connections would be leased out to private telephone booths and Internet cafes. The lion's share of the revenue from the booths and cafes would be collected by the accused. The fraud came to light when some of the addresses in which the Reliance Infocom sent its telephone bills proved to be false ones. Mr. Sasidharan said the youth also collected money from several people in the district promising them Reliance telephone connections. The mobile connections allotted to them were sold on the sly to others who ran up huge bills. The persons who were waiting for the phone connections were shocked to receive telephone bills in their name. The calls had been made by anonymous people from other premises using the Reliance mobile telephone sets, the Dy.SP said.
Search on for Sumitran
The police are also looking for one Sumitran (25) hailing from Muttada in connection with a Rs. 50-lakh Reliance telephone fraud in Maharashtra. The CBI had registered a case of cheating against Sumitran on the basis of a complaint filed by Reliance. The case is that Sumitran had cheated Reliance by reselling 71 phone connections he had obtained in the name of others. The bills of the 71 connections, which were sold to telephone booths and Internet cafes, were never paid. Police said Rajesh was Sumitran's agent in Kerala and both had been in touch recently. The accused was arrested by the Circle Inspector, Kazhakkuttam, P. Reghu.
