THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, DEC. 23. The Thiruvananthapuram District Panchayat today handed over to the University of Kerala, the documents of ownership of 1.20 acres of land in the tourist village at Akkulam, where an aquarium is to be set up by the latter. The president of the district panchayat, Sasikala Shivasankar, passed on the documents to M. K. Ramachandran Nair, the Vice-Chancellor of the university. Even though the district panchayat had already initiated works for the setting up of an aquarium at this site, the project could not be completed, Ms. Sasikala said, expressing the hope that the university would be able to accomplish it at the earliest. It was in accordance with a unanimous decision of the district panchayat that the site has been unconditionally handed over to the university, she added. A project like the aquarium required technical expertise and the university had this in full measure, observed K. Mohankumar, MLA, who presided over the function. The Vice-Chancellor said that financial constraints would not come in the way of the aquarium project and that it would be completed at the earliest. The thrust would be on ornamental fish farming and researches in this area. The export potential would also be taken into consideration, Dr. Nair said. Besides students and researchers associated with the Department of Aquatic Biology, members of the general public would also be provided with training in fish culture at the field station to be set up alongside the aquarium. The rich tourism potential of Akkulam would be of benefit to the aquarium as well, he added. J. Chandra, the City Mayor, was the guest of honour at the function. The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, S. Kevin, and P. Unnikrishhna Nair, secretary, District Tourism Promotion Council, spoke.
