Ban on rallies likely on main roads

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, DEC. 23. The city police are contemplating banning processions on all trunk routes in the city. "The ban is under active consideration in the backdrop of processions resulting in traffic snarls and inconvenience to people," the Hyderabad Police Commissioner, V. Dinesh Reddy, told reporters here on Thursday.

Asked if the police would confine processions to a particular stretch on the lines of Dharna Chowk at Indira Park, he said no such route had been finalised yet.

But, the police would ensure that citizens were not put to difficulties due to rallies in the future.

Drunken driving

Mr. Reddy said a drive had been launched to curb drunken driving that had been claiming several lives and resulting in injuries to several others in road accidents. Focus would be on four main routes -- Gandipet-Mehdipatnam, Begumpet-Marredpally, Durgam Cheruvu-Jubilee Hills Check-Post and Tank Bund-Necklace Road. "We are also contemplating summoning parents of youngsters driving vehicles in an intoxicated condition and counsel them," the Additional Commissioner of Police, A.K. Khan, said. It was found that a majority of those indulging in drunken driving were youngsters.

Seven arrested

The West Zone police, led by the DCP, N. Sanjay, arrested seven persons, most of them in mid-30s, travelling in a car allegedly in an inebriated state after Wednesday midnight. Though the Humayun Nagar Inspector, S.R.V. Naik, intercepted the car, the driver sped away only to be caught after a chase. All the seven occupants, including the driver, who were reportedly in an inebriated state, were arrested. They were sent for medical examination and later remanded to judicial custody.
