This Day That Age
Pope Pius XII, painfully struggling with a year-old illness which has left him gravely weakened, broadcast his Christmas greetings to the world in Vatican City on December 24. From his sick room on the top floor of the Vatican Palace, the 78-year-old Pontiff gave his solemn blessings to the world's 400 million Catholics. The Pope's quiet and steady voice was heard clearly with no trace of weakness during his seven-minute broadcast. He implored "heavenly consolations and heroic strength for all those of our children who have been forcibly isolated in prisons and concentration camps and who have been found worthy to suffer for the sake of the faith, of truth and of justice." For the first time in his 16 years' reign, the Pontiff did not have the usual, Christmas-eve audience with his Cardinals. Instead, the Cardinals sent him a message of devotion and good wishes.
