Belgaum
By Our Staff Correspondent
BELGAUM, DEC. 24. The Minister for Higher Education, D. Manjunath, has said that Belgaum is not in the list of places where the State Government proposes to start new medical colleges. Mr. Manjunath's statement during a visit to Visvesvaraya Technological University at Machhe on Thursday contradicts an equally categorical assertion by the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, during his visit to the city last month, that Belgaum is one of the six centres where his government has decided to start new government medical colleges from the next academic year. The Chief Minister had said that some "vested interests" were spreading rumours when the "fact" was that the decision to start government medical colleges in Bidar, Raichur, Shimoga, Hassan, Bangalore and Belgaum was taken by the Cabinet. The Government had decided to start the college in Belgaum out of its own concern towards addressing developmental requirements of the border district along with other backward areas in the north Karnataka, the Chief Minister had said. The conflicting statements by the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleague have caused confusion among the people of the district.
Common entrance test
Mr. Manjunath said that a delegation will hold discussions with the authorities concerned in New Delhi in the first week of January to impress upon the need to have a uniform Common Entrance Test procedure for the country so that there is no neither confusion nor hardships to the students appearing for the CET for admission to professional courses next year. He said that after the final round of counselling for admissions to engineering colleges in the State, about 8,000 seats have remained vacant. However, the Government was thinking of increasing the intake in these colleges next year. The Minister said the recruitment of lecturers to government first grade colleges in different districts will be done through the Karnataka Public Service Commission. Steps are being taken to fill the backlogs, he added.
