Bidar
By Our Staff Correspondent
BIDAR, DEC. 24. Devendra Hegde, writer and editor of the Kannada magazine Sambuddha, said here on Thursday that globalisation "is a conspiracy by the haves to deny Dalits the opportunity to develop." Speaking at a conference organised as part of B.R. Ambedkar's Maha Parinibban Dina celebrations, Mr. Hegde said that the onset of globalisation, liberalisation and privatisation had led to a reduction in jobs in the Government and private sector, commercialisation and privatisation of education and decreased Government funding to social welfare schemes. All this was aimed at stunting the growth of deprived communities, he said. The power of globalisation had also forced Governments to enact laws and enforce policies that went against the spirit of the Constitution, Mr. Hegde said. He warned that if the same situation continued, Dailts would be deprived of education and employment and be forced to live a life without dignity. The MLA Bandeppa Kashempur lauded Dr. Ambedkar's contribution to the country and said that not only had Dr. Ambedkar suggested welfare schemes for the Dalits but also for members of other communities.
