NEW DELHI, DEC. 24. India and Germany are moving closely to strike a comprehensive understanding to collaborate in the area of wind energy. Indicating this during an interactive session with members of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Assocham) on the prospects of wind energy cooperation between Germany and India, the German Ambassador, Heimo Richter, said that his country had already taken up the matter with the Indian Government and its concerned Ministry and indications were positive. Endorsing the views expressed by the Assocham President, Mahendra K. Sanghi, on the need for closer cooperation in harnessing sources of non-conventional energy, he said that globally Germany was the leader in wind energy. Out of 40,000 MW generated through harnessing wind energy globally, Germany alone produces 16,000 MW followed by Spain, which generates 9,000 MW. The U.S. and the Denmark respectively produce 7,000 MW and 3,500 MW. He expressed happiness that India was the fifth largest producer, which generates about 3000 MW of wind energy. This amounted to about 2 per cent of total electricity generated in India. Since Germany was the global leader in wind energy, it would be able to lend technology support to India for producing wind energy, he added. Mr. Sanghi said that Rajasthan was one state, which is doing a good job in harnessing wind power.
