PALAKKAD, DEC. 24. The Deesheeya Karshaka Samajam has protested against the move by the district administration to go ahead with the revenue recovery proceedings to recover debt from farmers. In a statement today, the Samajam general secretary, Muthalamthode Mani, said that the farmers were in financial difficulty due to the failure of the Government to procure. The service cooperative societies, which were entrusted with the task of procuring paddy from farmers, could not procure the same because the Government failed to pay the arrears of Rs. 2.5 crores as handling charges to procure paddy in the two previous harvest seasons, he said. He said that the State Government had decided to stop all revenue recovery proceedings against farmers for three years because of the severe drought. But the District Collector, K. Ajayakumar, decided to initiate revenue recovery proceedings against the farmers to realise dues. The Collector had already directed the tahsildars and village officers to go ahead with the measures. This move would be a big blow to the farmers who were reeling under heavy debt. Mr. Mani said some banks had also taken steps to recover dues from the farmers who had taken agriculture loans. The Samajam president, V. Vasudevan, urged the State Government and the District Collector to desist from the move. He also urged the Government to declare a special package for the farmers of Palakkad.
