ANANTAPUR, DEC. 24. The Vice Chancellor of B.R.Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU), D. Ramachandran, has called upon students to strive for attaining humane values through education. He also felt that universities should produce leaders with integrity and values. Speaking after inaugurating the two-day 24th State congress of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) here today, he expressed concern over the deteriorating values in society. He reminded the students that they had the responsibility of preventing the degeneration of values. The students' role would not end with mere highlighting of problems, but they should become part of finding solutions too. Responsibility of developing work culture to compete with the modern day world was also on the students, he opined.
Discipline stressed
The Vice Chancellor of Sri Krishnadevaraya University (SKU), Mohd. Iqbal Ahmed, stressed the need for spiritual, psychological and physical discipline among students. Suggesting them not to emulate Western culture, he appealed to them to give priority to humanity. He warned the students against the adverse impact of opening up the education sector in the country with the implementation of GATT from April 2005, which allows the managements an opportunity to toy with the education sector and further commercialisation. Organisations like ABVP must act as watchdogs on such developments, he said. The national vice president of ABVP, P. Muralishankar, explained that their organisation would believe only in bringing change in the people for betterment and not in change of governments, like several other students' organisations. He called upon the ABVP activists to become a social force. He stated that the theme of the meet was "Indianisation of education.'' A.V. Pratap Reddy of Intel educational institutions, R. Himakar and Tirumala Reddy also spoke. Earlier, Penchalaiah (Anantapur) and Mahesh Kumar (Warangal) were elected new president and general secretary of the State body, respectively. Later in the evening, the ABVP activists took out a procession in the town. The former Kadiri legislator, M.S. Parthasarathi, and a few teachers from the SKU also participated.
