ANANTAPUR, DEC. 24. The district leaders of the TDP alleged that the Congress leaders in connivance with the police were conspiring to foist cases against the party leader from Tadipatri constituency, T. Umamaheswar Reddy, of Pedda Vaduguru, who was taken into custody by the police in Hyderabad recently. In a statement issued here today, the TDP politburo member, K. Srinivasulu, the district president, V. Hanumantharaya Chowdary, and the general secretary, B.K. Parthasarathi, stated that Umamaheswar Reddy along with Jayaram and another person were picked up by the police from a lodge in Abids area in Hyderabad on December 20.
`Detention illegal'
Claiming that his detention was illegal, the TDP leaders sought to know why Umamaheswar Reddy was detained and where he was being kept. They contended that he should have been produced in court already if there were any charges against him. But his illegal detention was continuing so as facilitate foisting of cases at the behest of the Panchayat Raj Minister and Tadipatri legislator, J.C. Diwakar Reddy, they alleged. They demanded the police to release Umamaheswar Reddy immediately as his family members were concerned about his whereabouts. The Congress rivals of Umamaheswar Reddy were also planning to force the police to withdraw the personal security facility to him. Such a step would be risky to his life, the TDP leaders said.
