BSNL customer meet

TIRUPATI: The BSNL Tirupati telecom district will hold a customer meet at the office of the General Manager here on December 27 (Monday) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Similar meets will be held simultaneously at the office of the DE (Telecom) in Srikalahasti, Puttur, Chittoor (Urban), Chittoor (Rural), Palamaner, Madanapalle and Piler. Customers can represent their grievances pertaining to delay in phone fault repairs, providing new connections, shifts and billing complaints at the meet.

`CRS Day'

postponed

TIRUPATI: In view of the demise of the former Prime Minister, P. V. Narasimha Rao, the South Central Railway has indefinitely postponed `CRS Day', the annual celebrations at its Carriage Repair Shop in Settipalle here, scheduled for December 25.

Selected for

national meet

NELLORE: S. Koushik, an Intermediate first student of Narayana Junior College, Nellore, has been selected for the under-16 national-level Roller Hockey tournament, to be held at Ahmedabad from December 27 to 30.

Additional SP

takes charge

NELLORE: D. V. S. S. Murthy, a senior police officer, took over as Additional SP of Nellore, at the District Police Office, here on Friday. Incidentally, he was the town Inspector and DSP at Nellore. He was awarded the prestigious Indian Police Medal, in 1989 and also had long stints in the ACB and the Vigilance, Enforcement Departments.

Crafts mela

NELLORE: A `Lepakshi Crafts Mela' began at the Town Hall Annexe here on Friday. Among the items on display at the exhibition-cum-sale include artistic metal ware, bidri ware, kalamkari hand block printing, terracota khurja pottery, dresses from Mangalagiri and Chirala and finely woven dresses. The mela will be open till January 4 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Study loan

for minorities

ANANTAPUR: The Andhra Pradesh State Minorities Finance Corporation, Anantapur branch, is offering direct education loan to minority students studying professional courses. A maximum of Rs. 2.5 lakhs, payable in five instalments of Rs. 50,000 each, will be provided. Students in the age group of 16-32 years seeking professional courses, with their parents' annual income not exceeding Rs. 55,000 (urban) and Rs. 40,000 (rural) can apply up to December 30 at APSMFC office, Ganesh Complex, RF Road here.

EME convocation ceremony

HYDERABAD: Lieutenant General V.C. Jain, Commandant of MCEME and Colonel Commandant of Corps of EME, on Friday conferred degrees and presented awards to engineering graduates of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers of the second Technical Entry Scheme (TES-02) course. Krishna Kant Sharma was awarded the DGEME gold medal for overall first in order of merit while Abhinav Choudary was awarded the Commandant's silver medal. Twentyfour officers graduated and were awarded the bachelors of technology degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University.

MPP president axed to death

KHAMMAM: The mandal praja parishad (MPP) president of Yellandu and CPI-ML (New Democracy) leader, Burra Veeraswamy, was axed to death while he was asleep in his house on Friday by unidentified persons. The police launched a hunt for the killers. The Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Yellandu said personal enmity could be the reason for the murder.

Shinde, YSR greet Christians

HYDERABAD: The Governor, Sushil Kumar Shinde, on Friday greeted Christians on the occasion of Christmas. In a message he called upon people to take pledge that they would rededicate themselves towards freeing the world of conflict, violence and pettiness. "The message of brotherhood, love and compassion of Christ are relevant today," he said. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, in his greetings to people described Christ as a messenger of peace. The TDP president, N. Chandrababu Naidu, urged people to work for propagation of kindness and love as enunciated by Christ.

Koratala flays economic policy

ONGOLE: The CPI(M) Polit Bureau member, Koratala Satyanarayana, has criticised the State and Central Governments for taking recourse to the economic policies pursued by the TDP and the NDA regimes and called upon party workers to prepare themselves for a fight against the policies. Inaugurating the eighth district conference of the party here on Friday, Mr. Satyanarayana came down heavily on the State Government for failing to implement its poll promises. He wanted the Government to be transparent on irrigation projects.

Police drive against cockfights

KHAMMAM: The Sathupalli police have launched a drive against cockfights in Sathupalli and Dammapet mandals. Twenty cars have been seized as vehicles come to the district from neighbouring districts due to high stakes in the fight. The police have said they will step up raids in Aswaraopet and Vemsoor mandals also.

Non-judicial stamps burnt

CUDDAPAH: Officials burnt non-judicial stamps and stamp papers worth Rs. 42.50 lakhs in the Proddatur Sub-Treasury Registrar office and those worth Rs. 2.80 lakhs in the Siddhavatam STO on Thursday evening. Stamps of over Rs. 100 denomination, relating to the Telgi stamp scam, were burnt in the presence of revenue and police officials.

Farmer commits suicide

Sangareddy: Vadla Yadaiah (35), a small farmer, committed suicide by hanging himself at Koudipalli of Medak division on Friday. According to the Koudipalli police, Yadaiah was unable pay the loan of Rs. 70,000 he had taken for cultivation and domestic needs. Yadaiah's wife found the body hanging to a tree.

`Dilution' on free power rapped

HYDERABAD: The Nationalist Congress Party's State unit on Friday criticised the `dilution' of free power supply promised by the Congress, describing it as "nothing but deception." K. Prabhakar Reddy, president, in a statement urged the Government to honour its promise to farmers. He said the three-day State convention of the party would be inaugurated by the national president, Sharad Pawar, here on February 5.

Goldsmith dies of starvation?

KARIMNAGAR: A goldsmith, Venkat Swamy (48), reportedly died of starvation in Dumala village of Yellareddypet mandal on Friday. Reports reaching here said Swamy did not have employment and his two sons had migrated to Mumbai in search of jobs. His last rites were performed by villagers.

Woman poisons 2 sons, ends life

MAHABUBNAGAR: A woman poisoned her two sons to death and later committed suicide on Thursday at Vadidaripalli of Tandur mandal. According to the police, Kurulla Bandari massamma (28) mixed pesticide in the food, fed it to her sons - Yadaiah (6) and Narender (4). Later, she consumed the food. Family disputes drove her to the extreme step. Her husband and other family members who came back from agriculture fields in the evening found them dead.

370 fruit trees felled

ANANTAPUR: Three hundred and seventy ber trees belonging to a farmer, Ranga Reddy, were felled by unidentified persons at Chinna Polamada of Tadipatri rural mandal on Thursday night. A pipeline in his orchard and a diesel engine were also damaged. Ranga Reddy suspected that shepherds could be behind the felling as he had warned them against damaging the orchard when they entered it.

5 killed in car-lorry collision

Bidar: Five members of a family from Secunderabad were killed when the car in which they were travelling collided with a lorry and hit a stationary lorry on the Mumbai-Hyderabad National Highway at Kappargaon in Humnabad taluk on Friday. The victims were: Nanasaheb Nelakarni (33), Ishwar Devkhindi (35), Vijay Sindhe Benavur (43), Sharada Vijay Sindhe (35), and Sahibrao Sindhe (35). The police used a crane to lift the damaged car on to a lorry and brought it to Humnabad where electric metal cutters were used to cut open the car and take out the bodies. The victims were going to attend a marriage of their relative at Mangalwed in Maharashtra.
