Daughters of the late Prime Minister at Hyderabad airport.
HYDERABAD, DEC. 24. The State Cabinet held an emergency meeting here today and paid glowing tributes to the former Prime Minister, P.V. Narasimha Rao, who died in Delhi on Thursday following a cardiac arrest. The meeting, chaired by the Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, adopted a resolution, recording with a profound sense of grief " its condolences at the sad demise" of Rao. It also observed two minutes' silence as a mark of respect to the departed leader. The resolution said that the former Prime Minister was a great statesman, renowned philosopher and scholar of high order respected all over the world. He was an illustrious son of Andhra Pradesh, who served the State as Minister and Chief Minister, and the country as a member of various Union Cabinets and as Premier (1991-96). Describing him as an able administrator and astute politician, the Cabinet said that he engineered the process of economic liberalisation in India. "His legendary composure, unparalleled common sense and deeply humane approach to life were qualities that have left an indelible impression on the minds of all Indians. His death is an irreparable loss to the State as well as the nation. The people will cherish forever the remarkable strides the State and the nation made during Rao's tenure as Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and Prime Minister of India." The Council of Ministers conveyed its heartfelt condolences and the deepest sympathy to the bereaved family.
Memorial to be built
Later talking to reporters, Dr. Reddy said that the former Prime Minister had a special place in the hearts of the people of the State. A memorial would be constructed at the cremation site, adjacent to Sanjivayya park abutting the Hussainsagar lake.
