Free power will continue, says Srinivas

HYDERABAD, DEC.24. The Rural Development Minister, D. Srinivas, today asserted that the Government was committed to continuing free power to the agriculture sector and refuted the Telugu Desam charge that it was planning to do away with the scheme.

Talking to reporters here, he said the Government would not compromise on its basic commitment. The proposed all-party meeting on the free power issue on December 27 was aimed at seeking suggestions to make it foolproof and ensure that it was not "misused" for purposes other than agriculture.

Referring to the TDP leaders comments on why the Government had not consulted them before taking the decision, he said, "Are they in their senses. Free power promise was in our manifesto. Should we have consulted them on manifesto?"
