HYDERABAD, DEC. 24. The Penugonda MLA Paritala Ravi's associate, T. Uma Maheswara Reddy, and six others were arrested on Friday by the city police on the charge of indulging in illicit trade of firearms even as the Telugu Desam Party condemned the allegations as concocted story. In a press release, the Hyderabad Police Commissioner, V. Dinesh Reddy, said the seven accused were picked up from Koramandal lodge at Abids. Two country-made pistols, eight live rounds and two four-wheelers were seized from their possession. He stated that Maheswara Reddy was found to be involved in nine cases involving use of firearms. He confessed to the police that he hatched a plan to kill a political rival Suri who was convicted in the Jubilee Hills bomb blast case. The Commissioner said that Maheswara Reddy was involved in illegal settlement of land and financial disputes. Meanwhile, the TDP had charged that arrest of Maheswara Reddy was part of a strategic step by Anantapur police and rival Congressmen to strip him of the gunman attached to him. "It becomes easy for his rivals to eliminate him in the absence of police protection", the TDP in a written representation sent to the Commissioner said. The TDP alleged that city police arrested Maheswara Reddy on December 20 and subjected him to third degree methods to secure false confession. It appealed to Commissioner to do justice to him.
