Temperature

MADURAI, DEC.24. The city today registered a maximum temperature of 30.7 degree Celsius and a minimum of 21.2 degree Celsius.

Escapee found dead

An 18-year-old accused, who escaped from escort police personnel at Manapparai on Thursday, died after he was reportedly run over by a speeding train near Manapparai in the wee hours today.

According to the police, Anthonysamy of Chidambarathanpatti, involved in minor thefts, was arrested by the local police on the charge of attempting to commit theft at a house in the same village.

When the police, on a directive from the Manapparai magistrate, were taking him to the Government Hospital to get an age certificate, Anthonysamy escaped. He was found dead near the railway track.

The Tiruchi Revenue Divisional Officer conducted an inquest.

House burgled

Unidentified burglars struck at a house at Sundaraj Nagar at Subramaniapuram in the City late last night and decamped with valuables. The culprits struck when the inmates of the house situated upstairs were away. The K.K. Nagar police are investigating the case, based on a complaint from the house owner.

The police said unidentified culprits attempted to burgle another house located at Sundarraj Nagar last night.

Collector inspects works

The Collector, V.Pandian, inspected various development works in the Manachanallur and Thuraiyur blocks on Thursday. He inspected two percolation ponds established at a total cost of about Rs.11 lakhs on the Ondikaruppu Odai near Edumalai under the Tamil Nadu Afforestation Programme (TAP). He was informed by the villagers that the ponds had contributed to a significant improvement in the water table in about 20 agricultural wells in the region.

Later Mr.Pandian inspected road works taken up under the `food-for-work' programme and the construction of group houses at Edumalai. He also inaugurated the building of the Village Forest Committee constructed at a cost of Rs.2.10 lakhs at Kallkudi in Ponnusangampatti panchayat and disbursed loans to self-help group members. The District Forest Officer (Social Forestry), Vaigai Mani Shekar, accompanied him.

Mettur level

The level in the Mettur reservoir today stood at 87.64 feet. The inflow was 1,277 cusecs and the discharge 9,000 cusecs.
