HYDERABAD, DEC. 25. The former Supreme Court Judge, B.P. Jeevan Reddy, has said that in the present context of right wing assertion not only inside the country but globally, it is imperative for communist parties to unite. "Left unity is a must," he said and wondered what were the `insurmountable differences and impossible difficulties" which were preventing such a move. Speaking at a seminar on `Unity of the Communist Parties' organised by the Tammareddi Satyanarayana Memorial Society here on Saturday, Justice Reddy traced the fall of communist regimes in late 20th century and argued that unity and strengthening of the communist parties was essential to check the growing power and aggression of the USA.
Struggles weakened
The CPI State secretary, Suravaram Sudhakar Reddy, agreed with Justice Reddy that disunity of the communist parties was weakening the struggles on people's issues. He pointed out that existence of two and more separate communist parties was leading to "duplication of cadre" and assured, "We favour unconditional unity of the communist parties and are prepared to make any sacrifice for it." The CPI(M) central committee member, Paturi Ramaiah, said that there were two different communist parties because there were two different conceptions of how to implement Marxism-Lenninism in the Indian context. "Unlike bourgeois-landlord parties, communist parties cannot unite through leaders," he said. But he maintained that the two had displayed unity in mass struggles and despite ideological differences had put up united struggles against right wing forces. He gave the example of West Bengal where the two communist parties were running the Government together with other left parties as a good example of practical unity on the ground. E. Nageshwar Rao, Editor, Vishalandhra Telugu daily and Tammareddi Krishnamurthy, were among those who spoke.
