Lapang told to sort out differences
SHILLONG,
DEC. 25.
The leadership crisis of the Congress-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance Government seems to have blown over with the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, asking the Chief Minister, D.D. Lapang, to sort out differences with the MLAs.
Mr. Lapang, who met Ms. Gandhi in New Delhi on Friday, said today that "the issue of change of leadership did not figure at all in the meeting."
He also had separate meetings with Ms. Gandhi's political secretary, Ahmed Patel, the CWC member in-charge of Meghalaya, Ramesh Chennithala, and the AICC secretary, Madal Rebello, in the last few days as demands for his resignation and a "change of leadership" have been gaining ground following the developments in the Assembly earlier this week.
As the Opposition BJP and the NCP mounted attack for Mr. Lapang's resignation, the State Congress president, S.C. Marak, who was approached by disgruntled MLAs of the ruling coalition to take over, claimed that the Chief Minister had lost majority. The NTC MP, Purno A. Sangma, also demanded Mr. Lapang's resignation.
