States urged to prevent defacement of properties

NEW DELHI, DEC. 25. The Election Commission today directed authorities in Bihar, Jharkhand and Haryana to take steps to ensure that public and private properties are not defaced during the polls in these States.

In a directive to the Chief Secretaries and Chief Electoral Officers, the Commission said instructions should be sent to District Election Officers, returning officers, all political parties and candidates to ensure compliance of Prevention of Defacement of Properties Act. If anyone indulged in such undesirable activities, they should be prosecuted and proceeded against under the law, EC sources said.

``Any sort of defacement to properties whether government or private by pasting of posters, pamphlets, writing of slogans on the walls is strictly and completely prohibited, even if the consent of the owner of the property has been obtained,'' it said. Violation of the instructions should be dealt with sternly, the Commission said.
