Stop targeting cadre or face stir: TDP

By our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, DEC.25. The Telugu Desam on Saturday accused the Government of trying to frame its functionaries in `false cases' and asserted that the party would counter it in a democratic manner.

Addressing a press conference here, TDP leaders -- K. Srihari, R. Chandrasekhara Reddy and B. Gopalakrishna Reddy -- said that ever since the Congress came to power the vindictive action on the TDP cadre had increased. As many as 40 activists were killed, with Anantapur district alone accounting for 15.

Arrest deplored

Referring to the arrest of TDP leader, T. Uma Maheshwara Reddy, on Friday, they alleged that the city police took him into custody on December 20 and showed the arrest yesterday only after a habeas corpus petition was filed in the High Court. They charged that he was booked on "false charges" and demanded a proper enquiry into the arrest episode.

Activists targeted

The TDP leaders alleged that the party supporters were being targeted, particularly in Anantapur district, in a bid to make them switch loyalties to the ruling party. They said cases were foisted against Uma Maheshwara Reddy because he was a strong leader from Tadipatri. They warned the police officials to be prepared to face the `consequences' for their actions.

Urging all parties and democrats to take note of the manner in which the ruling party was behaving, the leaders demanded that the Government provide protection to the party functionaries and their properties.
