PERAMBALUR, DEC. 25. The two-day street campaign to allay apprehensions on the New Veeranam extension project concluded today with Ministers and officials covering over 30 villages in Tirumanur and T. Pazhur blocks of Perambalur district. Winding up the campaign in Tirumanur block, the Agriculture Minister, K. Pandurangan, said the team had apprised the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, on the need for construction of check-dams on the Coleroon bed on the border of Perambalur-Thanjavur districts for harvesting floodwaters during monsoon. The check-dams were found to be necessary by the district officials to harvest the surplus flow in the river at times of floods. Addressing the residents at a number of villages, the Managing Director of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, S. Karuthiah Pandian, said only 14 per cent of the total estimated capacity from the six wells would be tapped and that too only if necessary. The interests of the farming community and their irrigational rights would be fully protected. The Managing Director of the Metrowater, Chennai, V. Thangavelu, said there was not any over-exploitation of the source even under the New Veeranam project. Against the daily capacity of 100 cusecs, only 74 cusecs was being tapped in Cuddalore district.
