Man injured

in attack

Tuticorin Dec. 25 . A 32-year-old man was injured, after he was allegedly attacked by one Salli Ganesan with a sickle at Kovilpatti on Friday night.

According to the police, Salli Ganesan was having a strained relationship with Kumar (32).

The accused is yet to be secured, the police added.

Cut with sickle

Tuticorin Dec. 25 . Thangaraj (25) was admitted to hospital yesterday night, after he was attacked by another youth with a sickle at Nazareth near here.

The police said Thangaraj had a wordy quarrel with Murugan (20) at Kurippenkulam near Nazareth on Friday night, which eventually resulted in the assault.

Thangaraj was admitted to the Government Hospital at Sathankulam.

The police are looking out for Murugan.

Two wanted in assault case

Tuticorin Dec. 25 . The police are on the look out for one Ganapathi and Lakshmi, who were said to have assaulted a 46-year-old man here on Friday evening.

According to the police, the duo had problems with the complainant for a while over certain issues pertaining to chit funds.

As the situation turned volatile, the accused attacked Kasirajan (46) with a sickle on North Beach Road on Friday evening.

He was admitted to the Tuticorin Government Hospital with injuries.

The police have registered case under the Sections 294 (b), 323 and 324 of the Indian Penal Code.

Man hangs himself

Ramanthapuram Dec. 25 . A 60-year-old man today committed suicide by hanging at Thiruvetriyur.

According to sources, Ulaganathan, son of Ramaiah belonging to Anna Nagar in Madurai, came to his relative Ratnam's house at Thiruvetriyur near Thondi. His body was hanging from a tree near Kanmai. The Thondi police registered a case.

In another incident, Manikandan (25), son of Murugesan of Suriyur near Parthibanur, who was admitted to a Government Hospital at Madurai four days ago following suicide attempt by hanging on a tree, died today. A case has been registered.

Prasadam

by post

Ramanthapuram Dec. 25 . The Travancore Devaswom Board has introduced a scheme to send `Sabarimala Swamy Prasadam' by post to the needy devotees with the collaboration of the Kerala Postal Circle.

In a release, the Superintendent of Post Offices, Ramanathapuram Division, A. Dhanapal Sugantharaj said interested devotees should send Money Order or Speed Post Money Order for Rs.200 to the Executive Officer, Travancore Devasom Board, Sabarimala, Pathanamthitta District, Kerala PIN-689 713. Booking of Money Orders had already started and the last date of booking was January 12 and the despatch of Prasadam by registered parcel post had also already started.

Pension adalat

THENI DEC. 25. The Department of Posts will conduct a divisional-level `postal pension adalat' at the office of the Superintendent of Post Offices here on Tuesday, December 28. According to an official press release, the postal pensioners of Theni Division can represent their grievances or complaints at the adalat in person.

14 fishermen return

Ramanathapuram Dec. 26. Fourteen fishermen, who were taken into custody by the Sri Lankan Navy during the months of August and December, returned to Rameswaram today.

In August, the Island's navy arrested four fishermen, belonging to Nagapattinam.

Similarly, the Sri Lankan Navy arrested 10 fishermen, including one Chandra Bose (15) a standard X student, belonging to Jagathapattinam in December on the charge of entering their waters illegally.

The repatriation took place around noon near Katchatheevu today. The officials of Fisheries department received the released fishermen at Mandapam.

An official press release said State Government had made sufficient arrangements to send them to their villages.

2 die in accident

CUDDALORE Dec. 25. Two persons, including a retired Revenue Transport Officer, Veerapandian, died on the spot when the van they were travelling collided head-on with a tractor at Vattathur near Cholathram today.

The police said the accident occurred when the van was proceeding from Kumbakonam to Chennai. Another victim was identified as the van driver, Sampath.

Four other occupants — Sathyanarayanan, Karunanidhi, Thilagavathi and Valarmathi — sustained injuries. The injured were first taken to the Chidambaram hospital and from there referred to the JIPMER Hospital at Pondicherry.

4 killed in car-lorry smash

SALEM DEC. 25. Three youths belonging to Bangalore and the driver were killed on the spot and two others sustained serious injuries when the car they travelled collided head-on with a stone-laden lorry in the Salem-Coimbatore National Highway at Chinnaseeragapadi near here in the wee hours of today.

The police said the occupants in the car coming from Bangalore were proceeding to Kottayam in Kerala to attend a function. The police claimed that the lorry, coming in the opposite direction, lost control and dashed against the car. After the accident, the lorry driver Murugesan did not stop the vehicle.

Later, the police found the lorry abandoned some distance away from the accident site. The lorry driver was said to be absconding.

The dead included Prem, Karun, Jaideep and car driver Manjunath. Prasanth and Bojji were admitted to the Salem Government Medical College Hospital in a serious condition.

Tension in Salem hospital

SALEM DEC. 25. Tension prevailed in the Salem Government Medical College hospital for nearly three hours this evening following the death of a 57-year-old conservancy worker belonging to Krishnagiri district.

A group of his relatives and cadres of Dalit Panthers refused to accept the body alleging that Bothiappan, working at Aikundampudur near Bargur union in Krishnagiri district, died of a botched-up vasectomy operation at a Primary Health Centre near Bargur. They claimed that after the operation, he fell sick and was admitted to the Krishnagiri Government hospital, which referred him to the Salem hospital three days ago.

Hospital sources here said he was admitted for serious illness and headache. He died this morning.

These sources, however, said they did not know about the claims of the family planning operation. The police intervened and convinced the people to accept the body after post-mortem.

Solatium for noon-meal worker

CHENNAI DEC. 25. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, has granted a solatium of Rs.50,000 from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund for Selvi Bharathi, who died after sustaining burns while cooking noon meal at Chithiraikavundapatti Panchayat Union Middle School in Dindigul district.

According to an official release, the Chief Minister granted Rs.15,000 to Selvi Palaniammal who had sustained injuries in the same incident and directed the hospital authorities to provide better medicare.

The cook, Valarmathi, and noon meal organiser, Rani Bala, have been placed under temporary suspension.
