Poabs to operate solid waste treatment plant

By Our Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE, DEC. 25. The Kozhikode Corporation has decided to engage the services of Poabs Enviro Tech Private Limited on licence basis to operate the solid waste treatment plant at Njeliyanparambu.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the councillors here on Friday.

The councillors also adopted a resolution moved by the finance committee that had amended the provisions of the draft proposal.

According to the new proposal, the Corporation will give a sum of Rs 1.15 lakhs a month to the company for treatment of garbage. It was also decided to collect a security of Rs. 30 lakhs from the company.

In case of any environment problems arising on account of garbage treatment at the plant, the company will have to bear the responsibility.

Bill payment

The company will also foot the bill to dump the treated waste from the plant within a radius of five kilometres. However, the corporation will pay Rs. 30 per load of treated waste if it is dumped beyond five kilometres.

Corporation initiative

The corporation will also collect and provide the garbage needed for degradation.

As per the agreement reached between the company and the corporation, the company will not have any right to collect garbage directly.

The corporation has also been authorised to take over the treatment plant and the vehicles and machinery at the plant if work is not done according to the agreement.

The corporation decided to hand over the operations of the treatment plant to Poabs Enviro Tech after cancelling the licence that had been earlier given to Wilson company. Steps have been taken to renovate the treatment plant at Njeliyanparambu.

The corporation has plans to acquire 10 acres in the area.
