KOCHI, DEC. 25. The city will host three VIP marriages on Sunday, including that of the son of P.K. Kunhalikutty, Industries Minister. Ashique, Mr. Kunhalikutty's son, will get married at a function to be held at Hotel Le Meridian at 11.30 a.m. It has been widely speculated that Mr. Kunhalikutty will put in his papers after the marriage of his son. Various political parties and women's organisations have been demanding his resignation from the State Cabinet following the new disclosures by Rejeena, a witness in the Kozhikode ice-cream parlour sex scandal case. A posse of policemen will be deployed at the venue of the marriage. The official version for posting a large number of policemen for the private and family function of the Minster is the possible presence of large number of VIPs at the function. Policemen and sufficient security paraphernalia for the presence of Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues will be provided at the function, said a senior police officer. The former Chief Minster A.K. Antony will reach the city late this evening. There were reports that policemen at the local Reserve Camp were asked much in advance not to go on leave during Christmas holidays in the wake of the VVIP marriages.
Protests unlikely
Though the police anticipate some protests to be staged tomorrow against Mr. Kunhalikutty, there is least possibility of any demonstration of protest against the Minster on Sunday. "We will not be staging a protest tomorrow as it is the marriage function of his son," said T.B. Mini, secretary of Janadhipathya Vanitha Sanghatana that has been at the forefront of the agitation against the Minister. The Democratic Youth Federation of India has also chose to spare the Minister, according to one of the district leaders of the organisation. The marriage reception of Ajith, son of A.V. Thamarakshan, the acting general secretary of the RSP(B), will be held at TDM Hall at 5.30 p.m. tomorrow. A large number of political leaders are also expected at the function. Fathima, daughter of T.P.M. Ibrahim Khan, president of the CBSE School Managements Association, will get married tomorrow. P.M. Sayeed, Union Power Minister, is one of the VVIPs expected to attend the marriage.
