CHENNAI, DEC. 25. Recognising the need for more skilled automobile technicians in view of the growing number of vehicles, the Small Industries Service Institute (SISI) a Government of India administrative body has tied up with a private service station to provide hands-on courses. The certificate and diploma courses in automobile technology will begin from January 1, in partnership with a Maruti-authorised centre, Friendly Auto work. The six-month certificate course will teach the students basics of auto repair and maintenance, while the diploma course will provide a more sophisticated, in-depth practical knowledge and training.
Practical training
"Unlike the training offered at other places, students here will have the chance to learn practically," said S. Sivagnanam, Deputy Director (Mechanical), SISI. Students would also get training in entrepreneurship and would be taught about alternative fuels. "In the first certificate course, 16 of the 51 students found jobs straightaway ," he said. The SISI was also planning to give the students a chance to acquire certificates by City and Guilds, an internationally recognised awarding body. "This will ease their entry into overseas markets," Mr. Sivagnanam added. P. Valliappan, owner of the Friendly Auto and Friendly Academy, said there was plenty of demand for trained personnel abroad. To be eligible, a candidate should have passed Standard VIII. The language of instruction would be English. For details contact: 24731526/24732926.
