Fernandes denies charge

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI, DEC. 26. The National Democratic Alliance convener and Janata Dal (United) leader, George Fernandes, today denied allegations of paying money to anyone during his visit to his Muzaffarpur Lok Sabha constituency in Bihar.

At a press conference here, Mr. Fernandes described as a ``pack of white lies'' the allegations that he had paid money to a poor woman at a hospital in Muzaffarpur, violating the model code of conduct, in force for the Assembly elections.

``Is it a crime to save a person's life who has been starving for the past eight days,'' he asked. . ``Keeping in mind the poor health facilities and non-availability of medicines in Bihar hospitals, if any person out of sensitivity gives money to a starving person, he does not commit any crime or sin,'' the JD (U) leader said.

To a question, the former Defence Minister said that he did not pay money to anyone. Nor was he aware of his partymen giving money. Nearly 15-20 people accompanied him to the hospital and did not see who was doing what. He would file a defamation suit against those spreading ``lies'' about his alleged attempt to bribe the voters.

Authorities in Muzaffarpur yesterday filed a case against him for an alleged attempt to bribe voters Mr. Fernandes also denied having received any notice from the Election Commission in this regard.
