KANNUR, DEC. 26. The tidal waves that swept across the coastal areas of South India today claimed the life of a fisherman in the district. No destruction of property was reported from the coastal areas here that witnessed the rise and fall of water from noon. The fisherman, identified as Soman, 48, of Kettinakam near Muzhappilangad, died when he tried to bring ashore his fishing net and other implements. He had accompanied other fishermen into the sea. While the country craft was on its way to the shore at Muzhappilangad, the sea suddenly turned rough. The fishermen panicked as the water level rose. Soman collapsed amid his efforts to bring the fishing equipment to the shore. He was brought dead to the Government Hospital at Thalassery, the police said. The water level in the coastal areas rose and drained off three times around noon. According to reports, the coastal areas of Thalassery, Muzhappilangad, Mattool, Puthiyangadi and Ayikkara witnessed the rising of seawater.
Boats damaged
Some fishing boats berthed at the harbour suffered minor damages in the tidal waves. According to officials of the Fisheries Department, the water level rose up to four or five feet at the harbour at Ayikkara. The phenomenon was continuing in the harbour basin till this evening. The officials said that fishermen had been asked not to venture out into the sea for the next z48 hours.
