NELLORE, DEC. 26. At least nine persons lost their lives and scores of others were missing after a tidal wave slammed the coast at Mypadu village, 22 km from here, on Sunday. The villagers said at around 8.30 a.m. a 10-ft.-high tidal wave hit the village and under its impact seawater intruded up to one km. Hundreds of country boats kept in the sea capsized in the violence of the tidal wave. The foundation-stone for a park on the beach, which was laid during the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) regime, was uprooted. But for the Buckingham Canal, which was near the coast, the damage would have been heavy. The District Collector, B. Rajasekhar, the Superintendent of Police, B. Sivadhar Reddy, and other officials rushed to the spot and supervised relief operations. The Collector said the administration was seeking the help of the Coast Guard. Officials rushed boats and food packets to Mypadu, Nelaturu, Gangapatnam Pallepalam and other affected areas. The district administration has clarified that no damage occurred to any Light House complex in the district on Sunday. The Collector, when asked about reports of damage to Duggirajapatnam Light House in Gudur sub-division, said that the Joint Collector, N. Sridhar, was staying continuously in the area keeping him informed about the developments.
