Hmangte starts with a flurry

KOLLAM, DEC. 24. World Champion M.C. Merycom Hmangte needed just 10 seconds to stamp her class in the 5th National senior women's boxing championship at the Kadappakada sports club here on Sunday.

With a flurry of punches, Merycom had her opponent N. Aien scurrying for cover in the first round bout in the 46kg weight category. Aien did not have the wherewithal to counter the punches. Mercifully, the referee stopped the contest to end the mismatch.

Merycom's arch-rival V.K. Swapna also recorded an easy victory in the 46kg class. Swapna was too quick for her rival Jorjina Lata of Chattisgarh. Swapna's early aggression had her rival back tracking as Jorjina tried her best to stay away from Swapna's punches. But the Kerala girl with a combination of right and left jabs scored points at will to nail an easy win. V. Mahalaskhmi (Andhra Pradesh) and Lalbaik (Mizoram) figured in a gripping contest which was won by the Andhra girl 67-57.

Lalbaik started with a flourish landing punches on the right spot to shatter the morale of the Andhra girl. But Lalbaik started slowing down in the second round and Andhra girl seized her chance to land telling punches on her rival. Mahalakshmi landed more punches on her rival to come out as victor 67-57.

In 48kg weight division, Veerpal Kaur of Punjab used her better reach to defeat Kirti Sharma. Twice in the second round, Veerpal delivered the lleft hook with devastating effect forcing the referee to end the contest.

48kg: Veerpal Kaur (Pun) bt Kirti Sharma (UP) RSC; R.Vanlalduati (Miz) bt Richa Sharma (Utr) 22-21 Ranjani (Raj) bt S.Swarnya (TN) RSC; Ashu Rani (Del) bt Azung (Nag) 9-8; Kalpana (Asm) bt Sunitha Ekka (Jhar) 18-3; Kanchan (Mah) bt Mamta Panda (Ori).

50kg: S.Adilakshmi (AP) bt Revathi (Kar) RSC; Niharika (Pun) bt Alpna (UP) RSC.
