Readers' Mail

Instil discipline

Sir - I was surprised to read that erratic bus drivers were hauled up and driving licences of 19 drivers, including four belonging to the State Transport Corporation, were suspended. Kudos to the Deputy Transport Commissioner, K. Yogarajan, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic), Vidya D. Kulkarni, and their team for taking action.

Many bus drivers are rash and a law unto themselves, worse than even auto drivers. The fact that these bus drivers have also been charged is indeed commendable. Apart from the Railway Station area, periodical checks should be conducted in other areas of the city to instil a sense of discipline in drivers and to ensure that the law of the jungle `might is right' is not followed on our roads.

Public nuisance

Sir - There is a public convenience opposite the Thadagam bus stop near Gandhipark roundtana on Thadagam Main Road. The bus stop is an important boarding point for students of Bharathiar University, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Law College and the Government College of Technology. Devotees to Maruthamalai Temple and school students also board buses here.

It also serves as a transit point for people from Kerala who go to Anaikatti on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border.

The pay-and-use toilet was handed over to private individuals from EXNORA some years back. The contractor allows people to take bath during peak hours in the open veranda facing the main road and bus stop.

Due to this, people waiting for buses are embarrassed.

Steps should be taken to prohibit bathing in the open space. If that is not possible, at least the height of the wall along the road could be increased.

Another problem is that the roof of the bus shelter has numerous electric wires, which put passengers at risk during rainy season.

No refund yet

Sir - This has reference to the letter by S. Nagaraj of Coimbatore (Reader's Mail, The Hindu dated Nov 10) praising the IT Department for refunding his returns within two months.

In my case, I filed my returns on August 24 (PAN No.: AXMPB0997F). But till date, I have not got my refund. Will the authorities concerned take notice and do the needful?

Sudersan Robert,

Why the discrimination?

Sir - It appears strange to me that Opposition members of Coimbatore Municipal Corporation should demonstrate demanding amenities for unapproved layouts (The Hindu dated Dec. 18).

We, the residents of the LIC Colony (Industrial Estate P.O) coming under Kurichi Panchayat, have been paying all taxes due to the authorities for the past 40 years. Ours is an approved layout, but are denied adequate water supply, streetlights, sanitation and good roads. Many a representation has been made to the authorities, but to no avail. We get Siruvani water once in a week through a half-inch pipe for hardly two hours. The charge per connection is Rs. 55 per month. We have no alternative supply of water.

This is the position when Siruvani Dam is full or almost full. No review is done either for increasing the quantum or frequency of supply.

Those areas under the Municipality where water was supplied once in four days now get water every alternate day.

Why this discrimination? Let the authorities please take note.

For a cause

Sir - We find that several weekly magazines printed for sale through shops are not sold in entirety. They are returned to the publisher. I wish to suggest that after keeping a few copies, the remaining could be given free of cost to orphanages and old age homes.

Blinding lights

Sir - After sunset, one finds it difficult to walk on the roads due to blinding headlights of two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Sometimes, two-wheelers go without lights and some four-wheelers go with just one light, leaving pedestrians wondering if the approaching vehicle is a two-wheeler or four-wheeler.

There is total lack of civic sense and disrespect for laws in our country, and the only way to curb this is to conduct vehicle checks.

Licensing authorities should cancel the licence of law-breakers. There should also be a ruling that the upper half of all headlights be painted black.
