COIMBATORE, DEC. 27 . Even as people are struggling to get over the shock and grief over the tragedy that swept the coastal districts of the State early on Sunday, the community in and around Coimbatore has started rendering help to the victims. On Monday, various associations and unions together handed over cheques and demand drafts drawn in favour of the Chief Minister's Relief Fund to the tune of Rs. 3.19 lakhs to the Collector, S. Kosalaraman.
Collector's appeal
The Collector said that public contributions could be in the form of demand drafts drawn in favour of the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. He also flagged off medical teams from various private hospitals such as Kovai Medical Center and Hospitals, PSG, Ramakrishna to the coastal districts such as Cuddalore and Nagapattinam. The KG Hospitals has already despatched its medical team on Sunday and the G. Kuppusamy Naidu Memorial Hospital despatched a medical team to Nagapattinam today. The Coimbatore Press Club has requested the public not to donate as cash and only draw demand drafts, to be handed over at the press club office on Corporation Shopping Complex near the Avanashi Road flyover from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It would be forwarded through the Collector. Food materials, medicine and clothes could also be handed over. Professional Courier has come forward to deliver free of cost, materials to the rehabilitation machinery. Police gesture
The Inspector General of Police, West Zone, A. Subramaniam, has announced that over 12,600 policemen working in Coimbatore City, Rural District, The Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Salem City, Salem District, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts would donate a day's salary amounting to Rs. 5 lakhs for relief measures. This would be handed over to the Chief Minister through the Director General of Police. Similarly, those in search of their family members, relatives and friends could seek the help of the police. They could approach the City Police Office either in person or at 2301737, the IGP said. The Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) has urged its members to negotiate with their employers and contribute at least Rs. 100 per worker and hand over the demand drafts unit-wise to the respective Collectors. The Insurance Corporation Employees Union has donated Rs. 20,000 through its Thanjavur and Vellore Divisional Units of the association for assistance to the victims.
