COIMBATORE, DEC. 27. The Department of Sericulture and the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA) jointly conducted an awareness programme on bivoltine silk rearing in Sathyamangalam recently. Such programmes were conducted regularly as part of the efforts under the JICA project (the third phase of the project is on) to increase the area under bivoltine silk (white cocoon).
Move to raise acreage
The Department officials said that the bivoltine silk production now was about 1,000 kg a day from 300 acres in Sathyamangalam, Thalawady, Erode, Dharapuram and Gobichettipalayam. The objective was to increase this to 3,000 acres in the next two years. Through this, the number of farmers involved in rearing this variety of cocoon and its production would also go up. Through the dissemination meetings, more farmers were able to get the details of the JICA project and the benefits of bivoltine silk rearing, they said. The cocoon produced in this region was now sold to the reeling units in Dharmapuri, Salem and Padiyur. It was also purchased by the reelers in Karnataka. The Department sources said that an automatic silk reeling unit would be set up in Erode. A subsidy of 50 per cent would be provided on the machinery cost. The unit would enable the farmers to sell cocoon in their area and get a better price. Further, one kg of silk could be obtained from just six kg of cocoon. "This will be remunerative for the farmers," the officials added. So far, seven entrepreneurs had submitted applications for setting up the unit. Some of them would visit a similar unit in Thailand in a couple of months.
