HYDERABAD, DEC. 27. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has accused the State Government of continuing with the policies of the previous TDP Government with regard to education and promoting privatisation in the education sector. A resolution to this effect was passed at the 24th State convention of ABVP held at Anantapur on December 24 and 25. Giving details of the conference, the new State secretary of ABVP, M. Mahesh Kumar, told reporters on Monday that the convention discussed at length various issues concerning students and education. He said despite change in the Government, neither students nor the education system had gained.
Loopholes
Mr. Mahesh said the Government should plug loopholes in the Intermediate education and examination system rather than doing away with EAMCET. "The Government neither has the will nor the machinery to contain corporate colleges taking advantage of the situation and continuing with their system of fleecing parents," he alleged. He wanted to know why JNTU was being chosen for conducting EAMCET, ignoring other universities.
Change in system
He said the ABVP wanted the Government to start a Testing and Evaluation Centre to look into issues like reducing the number of question papers for 10th class students. "Politicians cannot decide on changes to be brought in education system and academics and students should be involved while taking radical decisions," he maintained. "Admissions into minority colleges should be probed and the Government should ensure that seats are not misused by colleges." He said the convention also discussed other issues.
Office-bearers
T. Penchalaiah was elected president of the State unit at the convention. Following are new office-bearers: Sudha Rani, M. Bapu Rao, Ramu and Dattatreya Kulkarni (vice-presidents), Narayan Reddy, Chilakamma, V. Ravindra Reddy, M. Venugopal and M. Ramu (joint secretaries). M. Narsimhadri (treasurer) and Ch. Praveen Kumar (office secretary).
