NELLORE, DEC. 27. The Chief Minister, Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has said the Government has proposed to construct an additional 20,000 houses for the fishermen community in the State, since they were the worst-affected during natural calamities. Talking to reporters at the Zilla Parishad High School campus at Narsapur, 15 km from Nellore, on Monday, he said norms for allotment would be decided by Tuesday evening. Describing Sunday's tidal wave `unexpected', he said the State Government rose to the occasion and undertook relief and rehabilitation measures on a war footing.
Allegations dismissed
The Chief Minister dismissed allegations from the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) that there was slackness on the part of the Government in providing relief. "I do not want to respond to those who pick up charcoals over dead bodies," he said when asked for his reaction to charges of belated response from the Government in providing relief. About deaths, he said while in Nellore district there have been 13 casualties and seven persons were reported missing, the figure touched 77 in the State with three more deaths.
Details sought
Regarding relief, he asked district administrations concerned to submit comprehensive details and assured that the Government would extend all the necessary help. Dr. Reddy said the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, and other leaders have assured all possible help in this regard. He expressed his anguish over the loss of lives and property and said the Government was taking rapid preventive measures in view of the further warnings.
