YSR's missive to Kalam, Manmohan

HYDERABAD, DEC.27. The Chief Minister, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, on Monday requested the President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, and the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, to extend all possible assistance to the State to help the tidal wave-affected families.

In separate letters addressed to Dr. Kalam and Dr. Manmohan, Dr. Reddy outlined the immediate relief measures taken by the administration.

He thanked the President for his telephonic call on Sunday expressing concern over the tragedy. "Your telephone call and letter provided me moral boost to continue the relief operations with more vigour."

`Worst-ever calamity'

The Chief Minister described it as the `worst-ever calamity' which had so far claimed 77 lives. More than 200 fishermen were reported missing,

Recalling his visit to the affected areas, Dr. Reddy said: "I got down in some of the villages, tried to console the bereaved families and ensured extension of necessary relief packages to the victims' families."
