This Day That Age
Indians shouting "Jai Hind" and "Pandit Nehru Ki Jai" greeted Prime Minister Nehru when the IAF plane carrying him landed at the Kallang airport in Singapore on December 27. The Prime Minister, who alighted from the plane with a smile on his face, clasped tightly the hands of Mr. Malcolm MacDonald, British Commissioner-General in South-East Asia, who was waiting to receive him. The Colonial Secretary, Mr. W.A.C. Goode, Mr. R.K. Tandon, the Indian representative, and local Indian leaders were also present. Accompanied by Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon and Dr. Syed Mohammed, Mr. Nehru walked straight to the VIP room to join the Burmese Premier, U Nu, who had arrived five minutes earlier. Mr. Nehru told reporters "to wait for another three days for me to return when you will have plenty of news."
