MADIKERI, DEC. 27. A book by S.V. Narasimhan, birdwatcher, giving information on 305 species of winged beauties in Kodagu district will be brought out here on Thursday. The venue is office premises of the publisher Coorg Wildlife Society. Zafar Futehally, ornithologist, will release the work, K.N. Changappa, director of Coorg Foundation, sponsor of the book, told presspersons here on Monday. The book, priced at Rs. 99, is dedicated to the late C.M. Cariappa, former Brigadier and founder of the society, Mr. Changappa stated. Dr. Narasimhan said he had taken 30 months to study the birds and compile descriptions of the species, common names, scientific names, status, sizes, field clues on morphology and plumage variations, migratory patterns, key identification characters, habitats, habits, food, cries of birds, nesting behaviour and egg morphology. Kodava names of 260 birds have been given. Birds are the "flying jewels" of nature and hence, he had named the book Feathered Jewels of Coorg. There are 1,250 species of birds in India, he added. In his foreword, Mr. Futehally says the book will be invaluable to beginners in bird watching. C.C. Somaiah of the society was present.
