UDUPI, DEC. 27. The Deputy Commissioner, T. Sham Bhatt, on Monday said all precautionary measures have been taken to deal with exigencies if a tsunami hits the district. Mr. Bhatt told presspersons here that the district administration has identified Mattu Padukere, Malpe Padukere, Kodibengre, Kadekar, Kuthpady, Ambalpady, Kanakoda and Udyavar in Udupi taluk and Kadavar, Kasaba, Kodi, Koteshwar, Bijjady, Kumbashi, Thekkate, Gangolli, Trasi, Maravanthe, Navunda, Kirimanjeshwar, Kambadakone, Uppunda, Tarapati, Paduvari, Byndoor and Shiroor in Kundapur taluk as dangerous spots. Buses, lorries, mini-lorries, and small vehicles will be kept ready on Monday and Tuesday in these areas so that people can be evacuated, if necessary, he said and added that they will be relocated at schools in safe areas. Gruel centres will be opened, if necessary. Fair price shops from where foodgrains can be procured have been identified, he said. Fire fighters have been kept in a state of readiness and their services will be made use of in the event of any exigency. Life-saving equipment will be procured from the Department of Ports and from private parties, he said.
Alert sounded
Mr. Bhatt said an alert has been sounded in sensitive areas and batches of officers have been formed to maintain round-the-clock vigil. Police vehicles with wireless sets will be deployed in sensitive areas, he added. A list of non-governmental organisations and voluntary organisations has been prepared to seek their help. A 24-hour control room has been set up at the Deputy Commissioner's office (Ph: 0820-2524924), Mr. Bhatt said. The Superintendent of Police, S. Murugan, said people should not panic in case of any emergency. The police control room is monitoring the situation in the district. In case of an emergency, people should call 100 or 0820-2526444, he said.
`Fishermen safe'
An official from the Department of Ports said most fishermen, who had gone out into the deep sea fishing, have returned. Wireless messages have been sent to those fishing vessels that have not returned. The Meteorological Department in Chennai has sounded no warning for Udupi district. However, it has told the Department of Ports to take precautionary measures at the local level, he said. Mr. Bhatt directed the officials of the Ports and Fisheries departments to ask fishermen not to venture into the Sea on Monday and Tuesday.
