GESCOM launches disconnection drive

By Our Staff Correspondent

RAICHUR, DEC. 27. Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company (GESCOM) has launched a drive to disconnect power supply to irrigation pumpsets of those who have not paid electricity bills.

According to officials of the company, farmers are reluctant to pay bills since the previous Government had announced waiver of electricity charges between April 2002 and March 2003.

The Krishna Government had taken such a decision in view of the drought in the State. However, irrigation pumpset owners were asked to pay electricity charges from April 2003. But they did not pay heed to the Government's request.

The officials said 50 per cent of farmers in the State have become defaulters. It is because of this, the electricity supply companies have launched disconnection drive to recover dues from farmers.

They appealed to the elected representatives and non-governmental organisations to persuade farmers to clear their dues and help KPCL improve power generation.
