HOSPET, DEC. 27. Konkodi Padmanabha, Secretary of Sahakar Bharati, a non-governmental organisation working towards strengthening the cooperative movement, has called for a partnership between the cooperative sector and the State Government and the private sector to become more competitive in the wake of the changing economy. He was delivering the keynote address at the two-day executive meeting of Sahakar Bharati here on Saturday. Narendrakumar Baldota, Chairman and Managing Director of Greater Bombay Cooperative Bank Ltd., Mumbai, inaugurated the meeting. Avinash Acharya, President of Sahakar Bharati, presided over the meeting. Mr. Padmanabha said the cooperative and other laws should allow such a partnership, which benefits all. He said 22.9 crore people are involved in the cooperative movement. Three crore people are employed in cooperative societies and there are 5.49 lakh societies. There are 47,479 non-agricultural credit societies, including scheduled urban banks. "With these statistics, we can understand the strength of the movement in the country,'' he added. In view of the changing economy, the movement is the only solution to the challenges being faced by the country. An analysis of the strength, weakness, opportunity and threat is necessary to strengthen the movement. Mr. Padmanabha underlined the need to involve women in the movement, which according to him, will help contain corruption to an extent. Sahakar Bharati will take steps to motivate and inspire them to launch novel cooperative societies. With the second green revolution in the offing and many value-added industries and agro-processing units being established, the cooperative movement should be ready to cater to their needs, he said. Mr. Padmanabha said Sahakar Bharati has come out with a three-year plan for the development of the movement. The plan aims not only at opening 1,000 cooperative societies, but also reviving the sick societies, he added.
