HASSAN, DEC. 27. A two-day convention of the district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), which concluded here recently, resolved to protect communal harmony and urge the Government to take steps for the integrated development of the district. The convention decided to impress upon the Government to establish industries in the district, protect farmers from the crisis in the agricultural sector, set up a government pre-university college for boys, and sanction land for landless labourers of Gangooru village. Addressing the convention, the member of the State Committee of the CPI(M), S.Y. Gurushant, said the Bababudangiri issue threatened communal harmony in the region. The coalition Government is following the "anti-farmer" policy of the previous Congress Government. The Government will not last long if it did not change its attitude. He said the party has no faith in the Government and is supporting it only with the intention of keeping the communal forces at bay. The member of the State Committee, K.R. Shreyan, alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party is dividing society and it is imperative to contain the attempts of fundamentalists in this regard. By protesting the arrest of the seer of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetha, Sri Jayendra Saraswathi, the BJP has proved that it has no faith in the Judiciary or the Constitution, he said. The organising secretary of the district unit, V. Sukumar, was present.
