Gujarat rushes financial, material assistance

By Our Special Correspondent

GANDHINAGAR, DEC. 27. The Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, has sanctioned Rs. 10 crores from his relief fund as immediate assistance to the earthquake and tsunami-hit States and Union Territory in South India.

Mr. Modi has also appealed to the people of Gujarat to donate generously to the relief fund, reminding them that Gujarat received generous help from people all over the country and abroad when it was hit by the killer earthquake on January 26, 2001.

The assistance announced by Mr. Modi included Rs. five crores for Tamil Nadu, Rs. two crores for the Andaman and Nicobar islands, and Rs. one crore each for Andhra Pradesh, Orissa and Pondicherry.

The Law Minister, Ashok Bhatt, has started off for the affected areas, to personally hand over the cheques to the Governments and to supervise the relief and rescue operations by Gujarat Government officials and volunteers.

A large number of State Government officials and employees have already reached Tamil Nadu and other affected States to help in the relief operations.
