NEW DELHI, DEC. 27 . The United States has announced an emergency relief of Rs. 44.5 lakh to India for providing help to the tsumani-affected people. In a letter to the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, the U.S. Ambassador to India, David C. Mulford, expressed condolences on behalf of the people and the Government of the United States and said that this preliminary contribution would go to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Indian Red Cross. "The United State stands willing to assist India in any other way that would be helpful," the letter said. These funds have been made available from the Ambassador's Humanitarian Relief Fund and are provided through the U.S. Agency for International Development's Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance. The German Foreign Minister, Joschka Fischer, expressed shock over the devastation in India and said the German Government was ready to offer support in this grave crisis. "In this connection, our Embassy will be contacting your Government immediately," Mr. Fischer said in his message to the Foreign Minister, Natwar Singh.
