Japanese team for Sri Lanka

TOKYO, DEC. 27. The Japanese Prime Minister, Junichiro Koizumi, has offered his condolences to the families of those killed in the powerful earthquake and the tidal waves that followed it across southern Asia. Dozens of Japanese travellers remain unaccounted for, a Foreign Ministry statement said.

Letters signed by Mr. Koizumi were sent to the leaders of India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Maldives, as a 21-member Japanese disaster relief team headed for Sri Lanka.

The team included doctors, nurses and diplomats, who took medical supplies and drinking water as well as tents to temporarily shelter up to 1,000 people.
