Chinese President offers condolences

BEIJING, DEC. 27. The Chinese President, Hu Jintao, today condoled the death of thousands of people in India, Sri Lanka and other Southeast Asian countries in the worst earthquake and tidal waves to hit the region in 40 years.

Mr. Hu, who is also general secretary of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), sent messages to his counterparts in seven Asian countries, including the Indian President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, offering condolences to the victims, the state media reported.

The Chinese President also sent separate condolence messages to the Indonesian President, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the Sri Lankan President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, the Bangladesh President, Iyazuddin Ahmed, the Maldivian President, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, the King of Thailand, Bhumibol Adulyadej, and the Malaysian Supreme Head of State, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail, on behalf of the Chinese Government and people.
