Poll battles in the New Year

JAIPUR, DEC. 27. With the announcement of schedules for the upcoming panchayat elections and for a by-election to an Assembly constituency, the New Year is poised to witness electoral battles in two different arenas between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition, the Congress, in Rajasthan.

The by-election to Luni constituency in Jodhpur district is scheduled for January 24. The seat fell vacant on October 22 this year following the death of the sitting Congress MLA and former Minister, Ram Singh Vishnoi. The panchayat elections, for which the schedule was announced by the State Election Commission today, is to be held in two phases in different districts. Polling for the election of members of the panchayat samitis and zila parishads will be on January 29 and February 2 in the first and second phases respectively. The counting is scheduled for February 8.

The State Election Commissioner, Indrajeet Khanna said here today that the notification for the election of members of the panchayat samitis and zila parishads would be issued on January 11. Thereafter nominations could be filed January 13. The date for withdrawal of nominations is January 15.

In the first phase of the elections, polling for the posts of panchs and sarpanchs is scheduled on January 31. In the second phase the polling date for these posts will be February 4.

The election of up-sarpanch will be held on February 1 in the first phase and on February 5, in the second phase. The election of zila pramukhs will be on February 10 and that of up-zila pramukhs on February 11.

Following the announcement of the election schedule by the Election Commission for the Luni by-election, model code of conduct has come to force in whole of Jodhpur district till the completion of the election process.
