JAIPUR, DEC. 27. Banasthali Vidyapith, the national university for women, is scheduled to launch its own radio station from its main campus at Banasthali in Tonk district of Rajasthan next month. Installation of the station, at a cost of Rs.12 lakhs, is complete and trials are in progress. Operating on 90.4 MHz in the FM Band, the station will be heard in a radius of 40 km around Banasthali. This means it will cover areas north of Tonk district and extreme south of the adjoining Jaipur district. "This is a New Year gift from the Vidyapith to the people of Tonk district,'' said H.L. Mittal, Deputy Registrar of Banasthali Vidyapith. The venture will be a community radio centre providing programmes of the interest of the community in the areas of agriculture, industry and commerce. Mr.Mittal said the radio station would have also programmes specially catering to the needs of children, youth and women. Folk music and folk lore would get particular emphasis besides, poetry, music, story telling and drama. Programmes in education for the benefit of children also would be broadcast, he informed. The Vidyapith, which has taken licence to establish and operate the radio station after making the investment and providing land and building, proposes to run it as a non-commercial venture.
