SHIMLA, DEC.27. There was a mild snowfall in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh today and the whole State, including the capital town of Shimla, was swept by a cold wave. The mercury fell below zero at a number of places, leaving water pipes frozen. Snowy winds kept blowing the whole day. A number of rivers and their smaller tributaries in the higher reaches have frozen. Thick layers of ice have already started forming at a number of places on the Chandra Bhaga River near Keylong. Suraj Tal and Chandra Tal lakes in Lahaul and Spiti have also been frozen. Normal life has been disrupted in a number of places in the far flung tribal villages. Shimla recorded the lowest temperature of December when the mercury dipped to a sub zero level yesterday. Majority of the people including the locals and the tourists preferred to remain inside in the evenings due to a strong iced up conditions. The famous Mall and Ridge wore a deserted look. There is a sharp fall in temperature in Mandi and Kullu districts including all the main towns. It went below zero in Sundernagar and Bhunter areas in Kullu. Due to foggy weather conditions in some of the nearby plains a number of tourists were seen heading up to the hills for enjoying the daytime sun.
