Railways' offer

NEW DELHI, DEC. 27 . The Railway Ministry has offered assistance to the State Governments of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, hit by the tsunami to reach relief to the affected local communities.

It has ordered deputation of Railway doctors to reinforce the State Government's health facilities, and offered the services of the Railway Scouts and Civil Defence personnel as volunteers to support local relief operations and also assistance of essential items such as blankets, clothing and plastic sheets from the Railway Minister's Welfare and Relief Fund at specific locations.

The Railways will give priority to bookings and transportation of relief personnel.

In addition, the General Managers of the Southern and South-Central Railways have been asked to coordinate relief efforts with the local State Governments and crisis management teams.
