Sandeep makes a big splash

MANDYA, DEC. 27. N.A. Sandeep achieved a unique feat of winning all the races in the fifth State short course swimming championship, which concluded at the PET swimming pool, Mandya here on Monday.

The 14-year old swimmer from Basavangudi Aquatic Club, Bangalore added four more golds to his kitty today taking his overall tally to 16 in the Boys Group II section.

On the final day of the meet Sandeep could have afforded some complacency after his hectic schedule on the first two days, but he stayed focused on the job to win the remaining four golds and the individual championship title in the Group II boys section with a whopping 112 points.

Other individual champions were: Group I boys: J.P. Arjun (65 pts); Group III: Aaron D'zouza (32 pts); Group IV : S. Abhinav (49 pts.). Girls: Group I: Shubha Chittaranjan (91 pts.); Group II: Pooja R Alwa (67 pts.); Group III: Madhavi Giri (66 pts); Group IV girls: Arahata (43 pts.).

Basavangudi Aquatic Club as expected claimed the overall title with 1495 points. The final day saw good races, with M. Shipra and Pooja R Alwa in a photo-finish clocked 14:14s to jointly share the top spot in the 25m freestyle in the Group I girls section.

Similarly, the Group IV girls 50m butterfly event saw two false starts, but it had a great finish as Arahata beat V. Vaibhavi by one-hundredth of a second. Arahata clocked 34.52s and Vaibhavi did 34.53s.

Group II: 200m breaststroke: N.A. Sandeep (BAC-2:43.19s); 50m butterfly: N.A. Sandeep (BAC-28.81s); 50m breaststroke: N.A. Sandeep (BAC-33.29s); 25m freestyle: N.A. Sandeep (12.51s); 4x50m freestyle relay: BAC `A' (1:53.83s).

Group III: 50m backstroke: Pramod Yadav (MEG-33.47s); 100m butterfly: Aaron D'Souza (BAC-1:05.30s); 25m butterfly: Aaron D'Souza (13.28s).

Group IV: 200m ind. medley: S. Abhinav (PMSC-2:59.06s); 50m butterfly: S. Abhinav (35.09s); 4x25m medlay relay: BAC 'A' (1:10.58s).

Girls: Group I: 50m freestyle: Shubha C (MSC-28.66s); 200m ind. medlay: Shubha C (MSC-2:27.38s); 50m backstroke: Shubha C (MSC-33.66s); 25m freestyle: Shubha C (MSC-13.69-NMR (Old-13.83s).

Group II: 200m breaststroke: Jesiaka Bole (BAC-3:01.50s); 50m Butterfly: Pooja R Alwa (BAC-32.21s); 4x50m freestyle relay: BAC `A'- NMR- 2:00.60s (Old-2:03.28s).

Group III: 50m backstroke: Tanvi (SCB-35.17s); 100m butterfly: Madhavi Giri (KCR-1:11.56s); 25m freestyle: Shivapriya (BAC-15.04s).

Group IV: 200m ind. medley: B. Viabhavi (KCR-2:50.93s); 50m butterfly: Arahata (BAC-34.52s); 4x25m medley relay: BAC-1:12.18s.
